Sup foil, ideal for discovering the beautiful sensations of foil
The foil continues to make followers throughout the world. A real revolution in the world of water sports, the foil allows you to discover new sensations and gives birth to numerous disciplines allowing you to live unique experiences in the best spots in the world but also in the calmest waters. The supfoil consists of using a SUP board equipped with a hydrofoil to fly over the water in strong wind as well as in lightwing. Whether you want to start foiling or to discover new sensations, the sup foil is the ideal practice.
What is the SUP Foil?
The sup foil is a discipline that allows you to sail above the water using a SUP board and a hydrofoil. Just like wakefoil, it is possible to start with sup foil by being towed behind a boat. This generates the speed necessary for the hydrofoil to lift the person out of the water with ease. The riding sensations with the sup foil allow beginners to plunge into the world of foil and discover new experiences of navigation on the water. This discipline also allows enthusiasts to improve their techniques before taking up wing foil, for example, or to combine all disciplines. Sup-foil boards are often used in wing foil.
Who is the SUP Foil for?
To practice supfoil, you don’t need to be an expert in paddle or foil. It is a discipline that is practiced with adapted equipment and materials and allows beginners in particular to discover the pleasures of foil. Indeed, learning supfoil is generally easier than other disciplines in the foil world. This practice allows not only to discover the foil but also to improve the performance of experienced surfers. To make a successful start in supfoil, many people choose to be towed by a boat. This technique allows you to get out of the water quickly while finding the stability to stand on the board.
When to practice SUP foil?
Before you start, it is important to check the tide schedules. This step includes checking the water level to prevent your mast from sinking into the sandbanks. In order to know the best conditions to practice sup foil in the ocean, it is also essential to take information on the height and period of a wave. The latter in particular make it possible to generate the essential energy for the first tests. In particular, a 1 m wave with a period of 9 to 10 s is ideal. There’s no point in going into hollow waves either. Slow ripples will be perfect to take the time to take off and enjoy the flight.

How to choose your sup foil board and foil ?
The choice of material and equipment is essential to practice sup foil in the best possible way. It is important to choose your equipment according to your experience in paddle or foil. There are also Sup foil boards that allow you to get started in this discipline with peace of mind. To help you choose your board, wings, fuselage and mast, here are a few helpful hints.
When choosing a sup foil board, the longitudinal stability must be taken into account. Indeed, it is essential to opt for a board that is very stable. For this, we recommend a board with + 25/30 litres in relation to its weight. It must also slide perfectly to reduce energy losses. A long enough board will allow you to meet this sliding criterion. There is no point in going to take boards that are too small and too wide, which may push water at the beginning and thus have a later take-off. Unlike a windsurfing foil board, the box on a wing foil board is often a US double rail whereas in windfoil, we are more on deep tuttles boxes.
Aluminium or carbon foil?
Just like when you practice wakefoil, windfoil or wing foil, the choice of foil is fundamental to guarantee the best sensations. Thus, it is essential to take into account the area of the front wing and the height of the mast. To start in sup foil, a mast between 70 and 80 cm is ideal. As for the wing, the larger its surface area, the more lift it generates to allow the practitioner to get up easily. As for the weight and materials of the foil, there are fibreglass, carbon and aluminium foils. Carbon foils are the lightest and provide the best performance.
The paddle is an important element when practicing Stand Up Paddle. It is also used to practice sup foil. To guarantee the most beautiful sensations and to make learning easier, fibreglass/carbon paddles are the most popular. They allow to easily absorb the efforts and bring the necessary strength to start on the wave. As for the aluminum paddles, they don’t have enough response to accelerate.
After the SUP Foil?
The foil is finding followers all over the world. It allows you to discover new riding sensations but also gives birth to many disciplines that are revolutionizing the world of sliding sports. The wing foil is the logical continuation of the sup foil. In particular, it is almost identical to the wing that comes with the wing. Wing foil can be practiced with your top board and your foil but there are also specific boards for this discipline. You will then be able to continue sailing in the waves or on flat water.
