Which foil to choose?
Before diving into the world of windfoil, it is necessary to opt for a high performance and evolutionary foil. It will allow you to upgrade your front wings and stabilizers while keeping a single mast and fuselage. The mast + fuselage combination is also called TBAR. The latter generally fits with most boards and allows very good performance. It is therefore important to have a reliable and robust foil from the start. Similarly, the choice of the front surface of your wing will depend on your size. The larger the front wing, the earlier it can take off. However, a large surface area wing is also more limiting in terms of top speed. Smaller wings make it possible to go faster. HOW TO CHOOSE A WIND FOIL BOARD ?
To facilitate your windfoil beginnings, we advise you to choose a long float to recover the support errors and to decrease the angle during the touches. The wider the board is on the back, the more power you will be able to generate on the foil. This ensures great stability during the take-off phase and ideal restoring torque when riding. Experienced windsurfers can turn to more compact boards with small sail area to reduce the aerodynamic drag and therefore improve their windsurfing foil performance. It is also possible to choose a windfoil board that allows you to practice with a fin as well as a foil.
Which sail to choose?
It's all about weight. The smaller the canopy, the lighter it will be and therefore the sooner you will take off and fly. On the other hand, the bigger the sail, the more weight it will bring, so you will need more wind to fly. However, once in flight, a larger surface area will bring more apparent wind and therefore speed. The more we put a large sail area on a small float, the more wind is needed to take off from the water.
WHY WINDFOIL ?
Like windsurfing boards, windfoil is a practice derived from windsurfing which emphasizes navigation in flight. Thanks to a reduction in drag and the lift generated by the foil, the sensations of riding are increased tenfold! This is a real revolution in the world of windsurfing. Moreover, windfoil is practiced as well in low wind spots as lakes allowing to open the low range of windsurfing. Indeed, the windfoil allows you to fly and glide from 8 knots. In addition to the new riding sensations, it is a discipline that requires less physics than windsurfing, provided of course that you master it well. Offering more lightness, it is ideal for those who wish to start in the world of windsurfing or simply for those who wish to fly...
HOW TO START WINDFOILING ?
For a windfoil beginner, it is best to start with a light wind that does not exceed 15 knots. When falls are not yet under control, it is best to stay away from other participants. Moreover, it is not necessary to release the equipment at the moment of the fall. It is even essential to accompany him to avoid running into the foil.
The longitudinal position allows the pilot to easily control the incidence of the foil. To be able to fly over water, it is important to find a good balance according to the foil's centre of thrust. The boards dedicated to windfoil are the most adapted to bring more comfort. They also make it easy to perform on different spots.
IN CENTERED POSITION
Standing upright in funboard as well as in windsurfing is necessary. However, for windfoil, it is essential to stand even more upright than when practicing funboard. In addition, the feet must lie flat on the board. Once in flight, you can then look for the gîte. In the same way, when you are a beginner, it is not necessarily necessary to put your back foot in the strap.
Wedges are now part of your foil quiver. There are two possibilities for their use:
- Adjustment of the float trim
- Constant support setting
We go into the details of these adjustments of hold in foil windsurfing in this article.
